Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery in which fat is suctioned from certain areas of the body. Despite the common belief that liposuction may be an easy alternative to exercising, it’s results are often greatly exaggerated and involves many complications. The most a standard liposuction procedure may take off is less than ten pounds of body fat, while the procedure itself may take up to thousands of dollars.
Compared to regular exercise, liposuction is not a quicker method of weight-loss, nor is it a lasting one. After the procedure, the patient may have to wait weeks for the side-effects to wear off and for the results to show. During this period, medications must be taken and normal activities may be hindered by numbness and pain. Liposuction does not guarantee long term weight loss. The patient does not develop a habit of exercise and good diet, and may quickly put the pounds back on. Repeated visits for liposuction then becomes very expensive and damaging to the body, as opposed to regular exercise.
Being a highly invasive medical procedure, liposuction may leave lasting scars on the body and dangerous complications. If the surgery is not done carefully, several types of skin problems may occur. The patient may suffer from skin necrosis, or dead skin, in the area of insertion, requiring extensive medical care. Spotted discoloration may occur as well as bumps and other contour irregularities which would require time to heal. More serious problems involved with liposuction include fluid imbalances, allergic reactions to the drugs used, and permanent skin damage. Fluid imbalances result from the loss of fat, and the fluids it contains. Typically the surgeon will inject fluid into the body to replace what is lost. Damage could be done to the heart, kidney, and lungs however if too much fluid is injected.
Allergic reactions to the drugs which create anesthesia may be severe, as they could cause cardiac arrest. Skin damage may also occur from infections at the punctured areas.
Using liposuction as a replacement for exercise and diet is ineffective and complicated. The effects may not be lasting, but the cost and damage done to the body will be. Developing a good habit of exercise and a healthy diet is the only method which will effectively help one lose weight without any harm or side effects.
